Commission a Custom Sculpture

I create hand carved sculptures for homes and gardens, like the pieces you see above. Each Commission is different, designed to suit the person and the space that is made for.

Why I Use Oamaru Stone

I work with Oamaru stone because of its soft, creamy color and matte finish, which sit beautifully in a garden setting. The blocks are generous in size and carve easily. Once finished and sealed, the stone weather's well and looks fantastic. It is also a more affordable option compared to many other types of stone.

The Process

When a client is interested in commissioning a sculpture, I begin with a conversation. If they live nearby, I usually visit the property to assess the space and determine the right scale and form for the surroundings. After that, I developed the ideas into a sketch for approval. Once the design is agreed upon, I begin carving. If I am unable to visit in person, I work closely with the client using photographs, site measurements, and email conversations to develop the design.

Sealing and Protection

The final stage of creating an Oamaru stone sculpture is applying 2 coats of sealer to protect the carving. The sealer I use is the same product stonemasons apply to protect Oamaru stone buildings. This helps protect the surface and helps keep the sculpture looking good over time.

Deposit and Final Payment

A deposit is required before work begins to cover the cost of sourcing and delivering the stone. The deposit amount depends on the scale of the sculpture and will be confirmed prior to commencement. Once the sculpture is completed, I provide photographs and video for approval, when the client is satisfied, the remaining balance for the sculpture is invoiced. Delivery arrangements and transport costs are handled directly between the client and the freight company.

Delivery

Within Christchurch, Most sculptures can be personally delivered. Larger works may require delivery by Hiab or specialist transport.

Nationwide and International Delivery

For regional and international deliveries, I work with Pack and Send. They professionally package the sculpture to a high standard and coordinate delivery to ensure it arrives safely. Delivary costs vary depending on size, weight, destination and insurance requirements.

Customer Reviews

In May of 2012, we commissioned Shaugn to sculpt a large Koru from Oamaru stone as a centerpiece for our North Canterbury garden. Shaugn followed our brief in every way and kept us informed via emails and photographs at each stage. During the complicated process of delivery from Christchurch to Sefton, Shaugn was instrumental in arranging such a delicate task, and was there on the day to guide and assist in the positioning and putting any finishing touches to the work as required.

We are both thrilled with the sculpture and it has become a talking point for neighbours and passers-by alike.

We thank Shaugn for his dedication and professionalism in his talented work.
